What makes an ideal team player? I believe great businesses succeed because people do.
In Pat Lencioni’s book, “The Ideal Team Player”, he spells out three important characteristics of an ideal team player:
Humble
A humble person is quick to point out the contributions of others and slow to seek attention for their own. They share credit, emphasize team over self, and define success collectively rather than individually.
Hungry
Hungry team members are self-motivated and diligent. They are constantly thinking about the next step and the next opportunity. A hungry person will take the next step without being asked and follow-through without reminders. You can count on hungry people.
Smart
Being smart is being self-aware and understanding your influence on other team members. It’s using teachable moments to benefit others, reflecting and not reacting and applying good judgment. A smart employee has an attitude of “what can I learn next?” Smart people understand the subtleties of group dynamics and the impact of their words and actions.
Are you exemplifying an ideal team player? If so how? And if not, why not?
